NORM’S FALL CADDIS SERIES

This past fall, I have found these three patterns to be very effective for our Sea Run Cutthroats (and late Summer Steelhead) on our local rivers here in the Northwest.  Nothing secret or complicated about the tie, materials are common exact colors seem not terribly important, sizes may vary a bit also.

I fish these three patterns pretty much throughout the fall season, dry line, 6 wt, 9’ leader, 4X tippet.  Technique wise, I dead drift the “Larval” stage from riffles into deeper water, quarter down and swing the “Pupa” stage through holding water, upstream cast and dead drift the dry “Adult” to rises.

LARVAL STAGE -
Hook - # 10 Heavy wire Scud hook (TMC 2457)
Bead - Black Tungsten
Thread - Black 6/0 or 8/0
Rib - Copper Wire
Body - Antron Sparkle Dubbing (light cream, tan, green)
Collar - Black Rabbit Dubbing

PUPA STAGE -
Hook - # 8 Curved Nymph hook (TMC 2302)
Bead - Black Tungsten
Thread - Black 6/0 or 8/0
Rib - Copper Wire
Body -
  • Abdomen - Blended Seal Dubbing (yellow, red, orange mix)
  • Thorax - Blended Seal Dubbing (dark brown, black, orange mix)
Hackle - Pheasant Rump (brown tips) two turns
Collar - Black Rabbit Dubbing

ADULT STAGE -
Hook - #8 Standard Dry Fly hook (TMC 100)
Thread - Brown 6/0 or 8/0
Body - Blended Poly Dubbing (Brown, Gray, Orange, Tan mix)
Body Hackle - Palmered (down & back) Small Brown Dry Fly Saddle
Wing - Deer Hair (not stacked)
Collar - Brown Hackle

Technical Tip

When building your own NORVISE Mounting Board, use three non-slip pads, two on the front corners of the board and one in the middle of the back edge.  This will keep you board from “rocking” if the desk or table is uneven.  Also use “internal tooth” lock washers between the vise and the mounting board to prevent the vise (or Thread Post) from twisting.

Customer Letters

Got the Nor-vise from you last week.  All I can say is wow!!!!  I have four other vise by three manufacturers but your is incredible!!! It is a work of art - I just can't believe how smooth it is and how much faster I can tie.  Will be buying more Nor-vise accessories as soon as I can sell some of my other vises.

NOTES FROM NORM  November 2013

It's that time of the year again for celebrating those special year-end holidays!

I hope your Thanksgiving festivities are filled with family and thoughts of all those blessings we should be thankful for. For myself it has been a good year with many things that come to mind that make me quite thankful. Getting out to several of those special fishing spots this past summer with close fishing buddies come to mind. Gaining greater mobility after knee surgery this past spring is always something to be thankful for.

As we approach Christmas and year-end, there are a few things I want to draw to your attention to in regards to Norvise. Be sure to check out the new Norvise website, norvise.com  We've made some significant changes to make it easier to navigate, the addition of a blog, and created a new ordering system that not only is easier but allows purchasing with the major credit cards as well as PayPal. We hope you get a chance to try it out.

And, of course, as we get close to Christmas we can't help but let you know about a special offer for that fly tyer in your family. Take a look! A new Lamp/Magnifier, Bamboo Mounting Board or Waste Basket might be just the thing.

Very soon the new year will be here and you'll find us traveling to some major fly fishing and sportsmen shows across the country. Be sure to take a look at the enclosed show schedule. If you're near by, stop in and say "hi". We'd be happy to show you the latest products from Norvise.

Norm's New Fly Fishing Boat

Norm has been working off and on this past summer and fall on his new still water fly fishing boat. After completing the "half-scale" model, Norm has now moved on to cutting out parts for the full size "Mark IV". Made from Okoume marine plywood and Alaska Yellow Cedar, this latest boat should weigh in under 100 lbs. and will fit nicely in the back of his real pickup truck. Plans (sketches) will be made available after the full size boat is finished, as they tend to be a lot more accurate if drawn up after the project its done!
